This solemn romantic scene from one of the most deadly battles of the American Civil War evokes quiet thoughts of the many who lost their lives here in 1864. I felt it important to place the lone bare tree and the monument in such a way to suggest a relationship between the lane on which so many were lost and the heavens above.
